When you are picking a metal gate for a home near the Charleston coast, the first real decision is the metal itself. Aluminum, wrought iron, and steel each react to salt air differently, and that difference shows up long before the gate wears out. Here is how the three compare when the air is heavy with salt and the humidity rarely lets a surface fully dry.
Aluminum: the low-corrosion option
Aluminum does not rust the way iron and steel do. When its surface meets air, it forms a thin oxide layer that seals the metal underneath and stops the reaction from going deeper. In practical terms that makes aluminum the most forgiving choice for homes close to the marsh or the water, where salt exposure is heaviest. It is also light, which means less strain on hinges and posts over the years. The trade-off is strength. Aluminum is softer than steel, so it can dent under a hard impact, and very ornate designs may feel less substantial than the same shape in iron.
Wrought iron and mild steel: strong but hungry for a coating
True wrought iron is rare today, so most ornamental gates sold as iron are welded mild steel. Both give you that heavy, traditional Lowcountry look and real structural strength. The catch is that iron and steel corrode aggressively once salty moisture reaches bare metal. A single deep scratch, an uncoated weld, or a worn edge is enough to start rust that then creeps under the finish. Near the coast, iron and steel are entirely workable, but only when they are protected by a serious coating system and kept up over time. Left bare or under-coated, they are the fastest to fail here.
Galvanizing: the step that changes everything
The single most important upgrade for a steel gate in salt air is galvanizing. Hot-dip galvanizing coats the steel in zinc, and that zinc corrodes sacrificially, giving itself up to protect the steel even at scratches and cut edges. A hot-dip galvanized steel gate that is then powder coated combines the strength of steel with corrosion resistance that approaches aluminum for many years. This is why a galvanized and powder coated steel gate can be a better coastal buy than a cheaper painted steel one that costs less up front and rusts within a couple of seasons.

Whichever metal you choose, powder coating is the finish that seals it. Powder is applied dry and baked into a hard, continuous shell with no brush-marks or thin spots, so it resists the salty film far better than ordinary paint. On aluminum it protects the look and the oxide layer. On galvanized steel it adds a second sealed barrier over the zinc. The combinations that last near Mount Pleasant are powder coated aluminum for the highest salt exposure, and hot-dip galvanized plus powder coated steel when you want the strength and ornamental weight of ironwork.
So which should you pick?
If your home sits close to open water and you want the least maintenance, aluminum with a good powder coat is the safe answer. If you want the classic iron look and are willing to keep up a coating, galvanized and powder coated steel gives you strength plus real corrosion protection. Plain, ungalvanized steel with only paint is the one to avoid in this environment, because it is the combination that fails first in Lowcountry salt air.
